The University Circle
“I can’t wait to meet our new members,” said a very enthusiastic young man. “They’re all first years so they will bring a fresh perspective on things.” Three young men and women of university age had gathered to the right of me. “How many people are coming today?” asked a petite young woman with glasses. “Maybe four new members in total,” answered a woman with short black hair. “So, let’s start with a round of introductions when they get here, and then we can get down to business,” continued the first man who had spoken.
The students all went off to place an order and came back
with the glasses needed for the drink bar and a couple of plates of an
assortment of buns, pastries, and bread. “We can put them in the middle and
share with everyone” said the girl who wore glasses. “I’ll go get some knives
and serviettes” said the girl with the short hair.
As they were bustling about getting ready their new members
appeared, all looking rather shy while shuffling from one leg to another. “Take
a seat!” said the first young man who had spoken. Perhaps a little louder than
was expected as at least two of the new members looked a bit startled. “Thank
you everyone for coming” said the original group members in unison, “let’s get
started with some introductions, please feel free to help yourself to some
snacks,” the woman with the short hair spoke as she pointed to the assorted
treats.
“Ok, I’ll go first, my name is Manami and I’m from Fukuoka
originally. I came to Tokyo during high school and have stayed on for
university. In my free time I like to visit cafes and museums,” said the petite
girl with glasses.
After this first introduction, everyone took turns and the
new members visibly began to relax. After about fifteen minutes everyone was
chatting away happily and they seemed to be planning some kind of event.
What a lovely interaction to have witnessed!
